Stop fighting your parents.

Most people think they can’t lose weight because they don’t have willpower. I know, I thought this too. While I was launching my Skinny Genes program to over 2.5 million Internet viewers, my emotional eating came back…I started eating and I couldn’t stop myself. I was tortured by this…”why can’t I stop? You’re such a loser, a fake, a fraud, you can’t help anyone…” Yet I knew there was a reason for this. I knew that my life experiences always teach me a lesson, and from my struggles come solutions that help other people too. So I decided to go deep and explore what was at the root of my sabotage. And I discovered the answer in a book by Anodea Judith who writes: “Willpower, or your inner authority, mirrors your relationship with your parent or authority figure.” Just for a moment, think about the authority figure in your life. What were they like at their worst? Controlling, manipulating, judgmental? How did you respond to them? Rebellion? Manipulation? Pleasing them but doing the opposite behind their back? Now think about what happens when you go on a diet. Do you follow it for a while and then binge? Do you completely rebel against diets? Or maybe you tell people you are on a diet, but secretly eat when no one is looking. Doesn’t your behavior look familiar? Now, as an adult, every time you give yourself a rule, just like your authority figure, you’ll respond based on your childhood response—not as You the Adult today. If you really want to lose weight, you must resolve your relationship with this person. And that’s exactly what we work on in Think-and-Thin. We’ll cover the last transformational tip tomorrow.
