Tip #1 How to Eat Like a Naturally Thin Person

Hiya, something interesting happened to me earlier that I wanted to share with you. I was eating at the restaurant below my home in Mexico which always serves fabulous, fresh food. Every day there is a different dish on the menú del día and today it was fish with beans, rice and salad.

In my classes, I teach my students to eat like a naturally thin person: slowly, consciously, savoring every bite, and never while stressed or distracted.

So, practicing what I preach, I was sitting quietly at a table focused on the delicious meal before me. But as I was eating, I noticed my thoughts floating away to things other than the food… work, emails, weekend etc. I even caught myself checking emails on my phone, gasp!!

I immediately put myself in check to figure out what the heck was going on.

As soon as I tuned in, I realized that I wasn’t enjoying the texture of the fish, rather it was my mind that was telling me to “like fish” because it’s good for me… and not because I actually like it.

Had I not stopped myself to investigate this, I would have finished my meal only to find myself jonesing for ice cream later because I wasn’t truly satisfied by what I’d eaten.

When my students start to implement the “naturally thin guidelines” I receive this kind of feedback all the time:

“Wow Brittany, I used to eat broccoli all the time and now I realize I HATE it!”

“Domino’s pizza used to control my life, until I really allowed myself to taste it, and then I just noticed grease.”

“My mom always made me eat everything on my plate, and even though I’m 35 years old I am only realizing now which foods I actually enjoy.”

Try this at home! Tune into your food while you are eating and notice what is it you really like about it. You will find yourself eating less, and you might also learn something new about yourself and the foods you think you “like”.

I have tried to notice what I eat but I get too bored. I just cannot force myself to notice time after time, day after day. The food is nice enough but it is too hard to keep doing that. I understand the philosophy of it but …

I couldn’t agree more! I am one of those naturally thin people you mention and I LOVE food. If I don’t love what I’m eating, or even how I’m feeling when I eat it, then I don’t want to eat it at all. For me it’s not a conscious thing but just something my body just does; it’ll stop feeling hungry (or even feel a little nauseous) if I’m not loving what’s in front of me or if I don’t feel happy when I’m eating. I’ve never really thought about it before but you’re absolutely right about the connection between consciously eating (enjoying!) and a healthy body weight.
